More of the same for ‘Doctor Who’ this week, with ‘The Cold War’ microscopically up to 728,000 “five city overnight” viewers. So instead I’ll concentrate on the seemingly perpetual indifference that Sydney has for the show, both classic and new. Since at least the Nineties repeats, Sydney has always contributed far less viewers than you would expect given its population.

Below you can see, for example, the breakdown of this week’s 728,000 between the five cities, and the approximate percentage of each city’s population.

City

Viewers

Percentage

Melbourne

232,000

5.6%

Sydney

154,000

3.3%

Brisbane

135,000

4.4%

Perth

120,000

6.6%

Adelaide

86,000

6.8%

I’m not actually sure whether the Brisbane area includes the Sunshine and Gold Coasts — if not, you can bump their proportion up to about 6.3%.

I haven’t trawled back through the archives to confirm this, but to my memory Perth has usually been the most interested, or very near to it. Let’s attribute that to them being the city that saw the show first, way back on 12 January 1965!

I’m sure everyone who went along had as much fun as we did and will agree the guests were wonderful! Thanks to First Contact Conventions for making it happen! Hello to everyone who stopped past the DWCV table and welcome to those who joined the club.

Now, Lords of Time returns in May for an evening with Eric ‘Master’ Roberts – one night only, Tuesday May 28th.

But, it doesn’t stop there – Lords of Time 2 lands in Melbourne on December 7th with another SEVEN guests, most of whom have never appeared in Melbourne before (and some not in Australia at all!).

It appears the announcement has been made now due to an inadvertent ‘leak’ by Doctor Who Magazine – the latest issue (which contains the cast information) was accidentally sent to subscribers several days early.

The Anniversary special starts production next week.

Each month from January to November 2013 John and Ben will record a live Doctor Who panel discussion – one for each of the eleven Doctors – with a different theme, special guests, musical and comedy performances and general loveliness. These will also be edited into podcast episodes, released on the 23rd of each month.

The first event (13 January) has the theme of ‘Authority’ and will discuss the first Doctor. The panel features special guest Alexandra Tynan (nee Sandra Reid), designer of the original Cybermen back in 1966. She’ll be joined by writer and filmmaker Lee Zachariah (ABC2′s The Bazura Project, Hell Is For Hyphenates podcast); broadcaster and host of 3RRR FM’s LiveWire, Nerida Haycock; announcer Petra Elliot; plus Ben and John as hosts. The musical guest (singing a Who-related number) will be comedian and cabaret artiste Geraldine Quinn.

The first forum is on Sunday, 13 January 2013 from 5pm at the Annexe, Bella Union, Trades Hall, corner of Victoria and Lygon Streets, Melbourne. Tickets ($13 full; $10 concession + $2 booking fee) will be available at the door (subject to availability) or on the web. Doors open 4pm, the forum commences at 5pm and will run for approximately 2 hours.

As outlined in the last issue of Sonic Screwdriver, next year’s meetings are a trip through 50 years of our favourite show; each meeting devoted in part to a different era of Who‘s long history – commencing in February with a visit to the black & white era. Subsequent meetings will pass through the introduction of colour in the 1970s, the JNT-driven 1980s and the ‘wilderness years’ of the 1990s, before coming up to date with the revitalised series that hit our screens in 2005. It all culminates in November 2013 with a 50th Anniversary event, which will take the place of the usual Christmas party.

Of course, it’s not all about the history of the show – there’s lots of current Doctor Who with the second half of Season 7 still to screen, plus whatever’s lined up for the Anniversary – and the club meetings will include plenty of ‘non-themed’ panels, discussions and activities. As well as discussing the 2013 episodes, we’ll look at other series and how they influenced (or were influenced by) Doctor Who; uncover the history of Doctor Who video games; meet Doctor Who stars before they were famous; discuss the place of fan productions and Big Finish; and welcome the return of the Doctor Who game show!

To finish with some dates, the next issue of Sonic Screwdriver will be mailed late January. The meetings for 2013 are:

‘The Snowmen’ pulled in 697,000 viewers in the “Overnight Big Five Cities” ratings, a bit of a premium on the regular season episodes earlier this year.

That made it the 12th-ranked show of the day — but if you take out the cricket and news shows, it was beaten only by a couple episodes of ‘The Big Bang Theory’, which eked out that honour by coming at the back end of Nine’s domination of the day.
