John Barrowman in Concert @ Hamer Hall
Jan 16 @ 7:00 pm

“Anything Goes” at a John Barrowman concert.

Exclusive to Melbourne, spend an intimate evening of songs, stories and laughter with the incomparable John Barrowman. From West End leading man to time-travelling hero, John is the epitome of entertainment.
Famous for his portrayal as the charming Captain Jack Harkness in BBC’s Doctor Who, John’s character was so popular he was given his own hugely successful spin-off, Torchwood, and starred as Malcolm Merlyn in five seasons of Arrow.

When it comes to the stage, John’s musical theatre career has seen him star in many West End shows, including Anything Goes, Miss Saigon, The Phantom Of The Opera and La Cage Aux Folles.

With boundless energy and an incredible voice to match, John’s charismatic stage presence will leave you breathless, with a smile as big as John’s on your face.

From Sting to Sondheim, Cole Porter to Barry Manilow, Big Band to Motown, join John for a raucous repertoire of beloved classics (with a few surprises in between).

Gippsland Geekfest @ Coal Creek Community Park and Museum
Jan 21 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

GeekFest was created as a celebration of geek culture; an inclusive, supportive and all-ages event, Geekfest will feature the best of popular culture – from comics to cosplay, steampunk to superheroes and the whole scope of gaming culture.

GeekFest will provide events such as demonstration and participation wargames, role-playing sessions, a cosplay contest and a range of traders.

Held at Coal Creek Community Park and Museum in Korumburra on January 21st 2018, the event will take place in a uniquely atmospheric location, with events themed to the environment.

This year’s GeekFest will include a world record attempt for Doctor Who cosplay, so we encourage all Doctor Who fans to come along to the event.

Australia Day Parade and Picnic @ Queen Victoria Gardens
Jan 26 @ 11:00 am

The Doctor Who Club of Victoria has again been asked to be part of the Australia Day Street Parade**.

The parade starts at 11:00am, however we recommend arriving a little earlier as good positions tend to get snapped up! Come and support us, along with seeing many other cultural and special interest groups from around Melbourne.

With the success of the previous year, this will again be a TARDIS trip, with a picnic afterwards. Members, fans, family and friends are welcome to join us for a picnic afterwards. Bring a blanket or a chair and a picnic lunch for a relaxing afternoon with other Doctor Who fans! We’ll even be having a Whovian game of cricket!

Click the image below for a map of the location where you can find us:

Australia-Day-Picnic-Map

We will also be manning our phone on the day though, so if you can’t find us, we can give you directions. 🙂

We are looking to start the picnic after midday (we will also have some committee members there early to set up and get our spot, so feel free to come by any time).

**If you are interested in joining us for the actual parade, places are limited. You must be wearing either Doctor Who related cosplay (Torchwood, Class, etc are also acceptable), or Doctor Who clothing such as a T-shirt or scarf. As there is a restriction on the number of people who will be able to part of the parade, preference will be given to cosplayers. Contact us to register!

March DWCV Meeting: Heroes and Companions @ The Hub Docklands
Mar 10 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Doctor Who wouldn’t be the same without it’s heroes and companions. Companions allow us – the viewer – to have a human connection to the time-travelling alien. While heroes come in all forms – human or alien – and can be found helping The Doctor..

This month we take a look at some of those who can be called The Doctor’s friends.

We will be running a couple of discussion panels on companions and heroes. We look back at the companions and heroes over the years. Followed by a countdown of the top 20 companions.

There will also be a wrap up of the 2017 Christmas special. What we liked and didn’t like about it, and what we thought of Jodie Whittaker’s first appearance as The Doctor.

Meeting theme and information may be subject to change without notice.

Apr 21 @ 10:00 am – Apr 22 @ 6:00 pm

This year’s Supanova Expo is a huge one for Doctor Who fans. With not one, not two, but three Doctor Who guests! Peter Capaldi (12th Doctor), Pearl Mackie (Bill Potts) and John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) will all be at this year’s Melbourne event.

Other guests include:

  • Alan Tudyk – Firefly/Serenity, Rogue One
  • Tom Welling – Smallville, Lucifer
  • Daniel Newman – The Walking Dead, The Vampire Diaries, Heroes
  • Elizabeth Henstridge – Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.
  • Lindsey Morgan, Bob Morley – The 100

Our favourite geek-pop singer Meri Amber will be performing some of her amazing music. There’s sure to be some of her Doctor Who tunes in there too!

And among the comic book artists will be Doctor Who fan, Stewart McKenny.

We’ll be joining not only the other sci-fi clubs of Melbourne for the event, but the Australian Dalek Builders Union will be joining us from Adelaide. So drop by and be sure to visit our full-sized TARDIS replica complete with working console (gold coin donation goes to support the Starlight Children’s Foundation).

May DWCV Meeting: Cosplay & Fan Day @ The Hub Docklands
May 12 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Guest Cosplayer Panel – our guest cosplayers this year will be Cat and Nicola. If you were lucky enough to see them at Supanova, their cosplays of Madame Vastra and Jenny were amazing to see, with Madame Vastra’s makeup taking 4 hours to put on alone.

  • Robert Lloyd – unfortunately two of our planned guests from Illusionist Productions are no longer able to attend (we hope to have them at a future meeting). However 1/3 of them is still coming along, who is none other than our very own Robert Lloyd. You might have seen him at such places as the Doctor Who FestivalThe Science of Doctor Who, or even his very own comedy production which he has performed around the world – Who, Me. He’s even appeared on the BBC documentary Doctor Who: Earth Conquest. He’s Australia’s most famous Doctor Who fan!

  • Beginners Cosplay Panel: The Companions – Cosplay tips and advice for beginners, this time we take a look at how to cosplay some of the Doctor Who companions.

July DWCV Meeting: AGM / Comedy and Humour in Doctor Who @ The Hub Docklands
Jul 14 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

July is our Annual General Meeting. It’s when we give our members and fans a chance to have their say on the direction of the club, with an open forum and a member survey, and look back on the past 12 months in the club. We’ll also be holding elections for the incoming executive and general committee (must be a financial member to be able to vote, but all are welcome to view proceedings).

Of course, we don’t want to have just serious business, so we’ve chosen a light-hearted theme to balance things out. We’ll be looking at some of Doctor Who’s funniest moments from both classic and new series alike. There will be lots of clips and laughs and we’ll be asking the audience what their favourite light-hearted moments are.

We’ll end the day with our committee induction ceremony, where we induct our incoming committee – Time Lord style.
